Sumiko Hara initially studied as a pianist before developing a passion for the viola da gamba. She obtained a Master of Fine Arts degree from Tokai University, Japan where she undertook viola studies.

Sumiko was selected by the Yomiuri New Talent Newspaper Program to give a recital in Tokyo. She moved to France in 2013 to begin her studies at CRR, Paris with Ariane Maurette and Guido Balestracci. 

 

She is a member of the ensembles Poseidon (directed by Arnaud Condé) and Les Figures. The latter is the 2016-17 winner of the "Evolution Series" program in Osaka Phoenix hall, and 2018 winner of the Barocksaal Prize in Kyoto. 

 

Sumiko is currently honing her performance skills at the Boulogne-Billancourt RRC under Nima Ben David. She has participated in a recording of the works of George Gurdjieff, arranged for viol consort by Ben David who directed the Belle Feuille consort at the Quartet Festival in the West in 2017
